As with any transport or home, maintenance is an essential element. When it comes to boats the biggest majority are only used for a few weeks a year. To ensure you keep your boat in tip top condition you should follow the following steps.

BELOW THE WATER LINE

Always make sure your boat is secure from damp and moisture and if possible leave frost protection in place over the winter months. Also make sure that fuel tanks are full to prevent condensation and that fresh water systems are drained down.

Oils and filters should be changed at least once a year or sooner depending on engine specification. Fuel filters should also be monitored for any water ingress also ensure gas lockers and engine bays are kept clean and rust free

The hull is one part of your boat that is probably most neglected over time. Without any paint it will slowly corrode leaving the owner with potential massive bills for repair.

Power washing and hull re-blacking are essential. When your boat is out of the water you should also make sure that the state of the sacrificial anodes are inspected and replaced if necessary

TOP SIDE

Make sure that any damaged paint work is repaired to a high standard and any bird lime removed as a matter of course. Even the best paint has a life span normally of about 5 years if applied correctly! So be aware of corrosion and act sooner rather than later

Many people often forget to check deck lines and gangplank

There no good if they are rotten!

Of course remember to keep up with licenses, safety certificates etc.

Happy Cruising!!
